One day her best friend Roger is taken by the Gobblers, who are a group who as part of their research are taking children to experiment on. The Gobblers are also known as the General Oblation Board. She gets an opportunity to find Roger when the seemingly wonderful Miss Coulter offers to take Lyra with her but Lyra soon finds out the she isn’t as nice as she first thought.
